Improving institutional memory

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

A company's organizational memory is a vital piece of its infrastructure that is commonly overlooked. Businesses understand the importance of holding onto records for compliance issues, but they rarely think about the corporate benefits of the information they have access to.

With a solid system for information management within your offices, you can easily search and analyze past decisions in order to affect future judgments. Records should not be viewed as entities that are stored in the basement in case any future compliance-related issues should arise. Rather, through the use of a document conversion service, data can be efficiently categorized, examined and evaluated.

Institutional memory also applies to your workforce. Employees will recall previously failed projects or some assignment they worked on that had some long-lasting, positive impact. However, as a company gets older or expands at a faster pace, archivable data becomes more reliable and important. Relying on the handbook and randomly updated news section on your company's website, however, may not be the best approach for understanding past practices.
