Digitization: A worldwide trend

Though there have been numerous stories in the American media about corporations, academic institutions and medical centers adopting electronic document management systems, this trend is also being adopted in other nations. Many organizations across the globe have recognized the benefits that go hand in hand with this technology, including increased office space, easier management of access and new ways to keep files secure.

For example, according to The Times of India, the nation's Calicut University is now digitizing PhD theses to make the information accessible to researchers anywhere. The news outlet said that the institution recently launched the Indian Electronics Theses Repository project, which will be implemented at the CH Mohammed Koya Library.

The Times reported that 30 other schools in India have signed up for this project, and that the theses of 250 PhD candidates are already online – 2,500 more will be added with this effort.

When files of this type are hosted on online databases, with proper access, nearly anyone with internet enabled devices can use the documents for research purposes. This can also serve to protect the information should a disaster or loss occur at the library housing the primary sources.
