Albemarle County implements paperless parent portal

Gone are the days when students in Albemarle County, Virginia, wait for their report cards to be mailed out in a hurried effort to stow them away from their parents.

The school district has implemented a content management service that includes a parent portal, according to The Daily Progress. This resource will have listed assignments, bus routes, attendance, schedules, syllabi and progress reports – all available through the internet. The hope is that the switch to paperless communications between the school and parents will both save money and increase access to an expanded catalog of information reports Charlottesville Tomorrow.

"Both objectives are important," Billy Haun, assistant superintendent for student learning, told the newspaper. "We want to save every dollar we can, but at the same time, we'd like to make it easier for parents to be more involved on a more frequent basis with their child's education."

Officials estimate the transition could save up to $100,000 annually for the district. Two years ago the system was launched as a pilot program. Now schools such as Sutherland Middle School see 93 percent participation from parents.

The country also launched a Broadband Task Force in order to assist those without internet access. The team plans on releasing a report next month with findings on how to expand internet access within the area.
